Course objectives
This course focuses on recent independent film production in the U.S.A. In the course of the semester the participants will watch and discuss works by a number of innovative and critically acclaimed directors such as Spike Lee, Jim Jarmush, John Sayles, Julie Dash and Lizzie Borden. While aiming to present American independent filmmaking in its distinct strains, the course attempts to define its possible common ground and map some of its persistent concerns. The reading consists of a collection of critical studies on the subject.
