Course objectives
Starting from Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman's film script and the film Shakespeare in Love (directed by John Madden), the course will explore its multidimensional allusions to Romeo and Juliet against the backdrop of Renaissance theatre in England and Shakespeare's life and work. Some other famous love stories from Shakespeare's plays will also be discussed. Shakespeare's treatment of love and Stoppard's treatment of Shakespeare will be set within the hypertextual framework of recent Shakespearean criticim and debate in literary and cultural studies.
