Kurz je chápán jako vstup do problematiky současného poradenství a trendů jeho vývoje. Těžiště kurzu je v otázkách vedení poradenského procesu (fáze poradenského procesu, osobnost poradce, metody a formy poradenské práce apod.) na pozadí jednotlivých poradenských směrů a škol. (kognitivně-behaviorální školy, Rogersova škola, Franklova škola, realitní terapie, systemické poradenství).
