- Course objectives
- The course focuses on the work of Quebec writer Réjean Ducharme from a number of different viewpoints. The writer is a peculiar, difficult to classify figure on the Quebec literary scene, featuring an inimitable writing style. Both the author and his work are important reference points in Quebec literature, which can be seen e.g. in the fact that many young writers are taking him as an example. Ducharm's novels form the focal point of the course, his plays will, however, be discussed as well.
- Syllabus
- The first part of the course will be devoted to placing Ducharme's work into the proper historical context as well as comparing it with selected francophone Canadian writers. Novel analysis will include a discussion of literary theory and method as well as selected linguistic methods of text analysis. Much of the course will rely on individual homework and work with the text. In connection with the issue of intertextuality, several French (as well as other) writers which Ducharme either admires or parodies will be referred to (Lautréamont, Nelligan, Sartre, Gauvreau, Vian, etc.)
