Course objectives
Definition of general semantic notions; theory and classification of semantic changes; the importance of research in lexicology for the quality of the lexicographic production; general characteristics of French dictionaries.
Syllabus
  • Synchronic approach – presentation of the categories of lexical semantic description (synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, homonymy, etc.) Diachronic approach – classification of semantic shifts. Regional, generational, social and stylistic variation. Emphasizing the practical importance of lexicological research for the quality of lexicographical production. Characteristics of French dictionaries. Special attention will be devoted to the problem of the word as a unit of description of language, due to its limited phonetic and syntactic autonomy.

Teaching methods
Application of theoretical knowledge on authentic texts. During their presentations students show their ability to interconnect on their own their lexicographical knowledge and practical analysis of specific occurrences.
Assessment methods
Credit – fulfilling weekly tasks, short final test. Lecture and seminar attendance is mandatory.
