- Course objectives
- The reasons for the collapse of the sovereign state of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1938-1939 and the fight for its re-establishment during the Second World War. External and internal factors in the struggle for political power in postwar Czechoslovakia, the results of the February events for Czechoslovakia’s international standing.
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the most significant events in the development of Czech statehood in the period between Munich 1938 and February 1948, to show the consequences of the divided spheres of influence between the victorious powers on the development of political power in Czechoslovakia between 1945 and 1948. To contribute to the development of students’ ability to independently analyse documents and literature from various sources and to use them when researching specific questions concerning the period 1938-1948. - Syllabus
- The causes and consequences of Munich 1938 for Czechoslovak statehood, the chances of defending the Republic in 1938.
- Political development in the Second Republic, the forced break-up of Czechoslovakia in March 1939.
- The links between the formation of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and the independent Republic of Slovakia.
- Attempts to maintain the continuity of Czechoslovak statehood in the resistance at home and abroad, establishing conditions for the re-establishment of statehood during the closing phase of the the Second World War.
- Ideas for a policy programme for the new government. The Košice government plan.
- Internal and external factors affecting the political development between 1945-1948 (the Beneš Decrees, the forcible transfer, retribution, 1946 elections etc).
- What was open and closed to the main political powers as they struggled to seize power during this period.
- February 1948 and its consequences.
