Course objectives
The Song of Songs and its effect on literature from the Antiquity to the early modern times, and primarily on the medieval Latin literature. The main objective of the course can be summarized as follows: to demonstrate how reading and interpretation of the Song of Songs developed in Latin exegetical literature; how its text was adapted in other genres; how the Song of Songs effected Latin and Old Czech literature of Bohemia in Middle Ages and New-Czech literature in early modern times. The main authors in these thematic areas will be examined in more depth through reading and interpretation of their texts.

  • 1. The Song of Songs and Christianity.
  • 2. Latin exegesis of the Song of Songs: Origenes (in Latin translation). Gregory the Great. Bede the Venerable. Honorius Augustodunensis. Rupert of Deutz. Bernard of Clairvaux.
  • 3. The Song of Songs in other genres of medieval literature: Historiography. Epistolography and Artes poeticae. Secular poetry. Sacred lyric. Devotional and mystical literature.
  • 4. The Song of Songs in both Latin and Czech literatures in the Middle Ages (Robert of Olomouc, Peter of Zittau, Iohannes of Jenstein, Iohannes Hus, Otep myrrhy - Sheaf of Myrrh, Výklad piesniček Šalomúnových - Interpretation of King Solomon`s Songs).
  • 5. Translations of the Song of Songs in modern times (Comenius, Bible kralická, J. Seifert, V. Fichl, Čan, M. Balabán).
