Course objectives
The lecture is intended as an introduction into historical phonology of Greek. At the end of the course students should have basic knowledge of the historical phonology of the Greek language so that they are able to understand and to explain the phonological development of single forms or to judge independently proposed etymologies of Greek words.
Syllabus
  • Themes of the lecture are: basic terminology, operation of sound laws, development of vowels and consonants from Proto-Indo-European to Greek, Greek and the laryngeal theory. The lecture refers to students of Greek philology and Indo-European linguistics.
