Course objectives
The students will be able discuss the basic knowledge in the field of human communication: body language, the language of voice vs. language as a communication code in various communication situations. This year's seminar focuses the pragmatic aspect of diminutives.
As the students must present a paper in a seminar, the next (secondary) goal of this course is to train/gain skills in preparing and presenting a scientific text in a foreign language.
Syllabus
  • 1) Communication as an act, the communication model, communication partners and their relationships, communication channels
  • 2) Paralinguistic: definition, relationship to linguistics, language of the voice, body language
  • 3) Pragmalinguistics: history, relationship to other linguistic fields; conversational maxims; proposition and presupposition, speech acts (locutionary, illocutionary, perlocutionary act); perlocutionary act and effect; performative and non-performative utterance
  • 4) Usage of diminutives, pragmatic aspect of the diminution
  • 5) The Usage of diminutives in Czech and German
  • 6) Addressing in diminutives
  • 7) Cursing / swearing and insulting in diminutives
