Course objectives
After completing the course the students will be able to: - match a problem or expression from the history of ontology to a philosopher, historical era and other philosophical nexus. - identify a problem emerging from discussion on ontological questions; explain systematically (not only historically) the major explicative tendencies in ontology. Reading source literature should result in good knowledge of original text and the ability to classify it in historical and philosophical context. After the above mentioned abilities have been proved it is possible to debate some of the issues.
Syllabus
  • The overview of the main types and particular fashions of ontological concepts from the Antique till today. The main accent is given to the changes of the understanding of key traditional ontological categories (the time, the space, the movement, the being, the universe) and their progressive confluence with the natural problems. The critique of stationary and anthropological understanding to ontology.

Assessment methods
The course ends with a credit, which is a condition for admission to qualifying examination (if the student does not require qualifying examination they can finish the course with a standard course exam). To be given a credit the student must hand in a seminar paper meeting the following conditions: the theme is chosen from the list of lectured themes the main source of reading material is primary literature (some works are available in pdf format in study materials in IS.) all sources must be thoroughly quoted with full bibliographical references. all statements must be supported with an argument Expressions like "I think" are not arguments. Non argumentative paper is fully sufficient. Save deep and critical thinking for the historical philosophical concepts. Papers with a greater than small number of spelling and grammatical mistakes will be rejected. Papers must be handed in in time - I have seven days to mark your paper and enter the evaluation in IS.
