Course objectives
The aim of the course of Semantics is to make students acquainted with the backgrounds of general semantic problems such as the definition and explanation of basic terms (semantics, semiology, semiotics, onomaziology, semaziolgy, sign: significant, signifié, signification, denotatum, predication, argument, intension and extension. In the synchronic part various of the lexical-semantic transcription are illustrated. Other problems will be mentioned marginally – vagueness of meaning, strictness of meanings, stereotypes, polyssemic meanings, idiomatic phrases, onomatopoeic words, attributive and non attributive character of signs. We shall describe different theories and classification of semantic changes from a diachronic as well as a synchronic point of view. We shall analyze different categories of lexical-semantic description (synonymous, antonymous, polysemic and homonymic relation between the words). Students should be able to define basic terms of a linguistic discipline in question. When analyzing particular texts and exercises, he or she should be able to apply these terms and deduce from the observed phenomena the proper conclusions. At the end of this course, students will be able to deduce and explain the rules of basic (semantics phenomena and identify the deviations from the standard. He or she will be able justify and bring serious arguments to support his or her thesis. Eventually, he or she will be able to propose a solution in accord with the standard.
