Prerequisite for the attendance is completion of "Latin for the Students of the Faculty of Arts I". Exceptions can be granted following an agreement with the instructor.

Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to:
reproduce nominal and verbal paradigms studied within the course (see syllabus of the course);
explain grammatical rules studied within the course;
use basic Latin grammatical terminology associated with the grammar studied within the course;
translate elementary Latin texts using a dictionary;
explain the functions of selected syntactic structures;
use synonymous expressive means to express selected grammatical phenomena;
demonstrate relations between roots of selected Latin words and Czech loan words.
Syllabus
  • 1. Comparison of adjectives and adverbs.
  • 2. Present and imperfect subjunctive mood of all conjugations and the verb esse. Their use in simple sentences.
  • 3. Use of present and imperfect subjunctive mood in subordinate clauses (UT clauses, cum historicum).
  • 4. Perfect indicative tense (active and passive voices).
  • 5. Perfect infinitive (active and passive voices).
  • 6. Ablative absolute.
  • 7. Revision. TEST.
  • 8. Indicative of the pluperfect and future perfect tenses (active and passive voices)
  • 9. Indicative subordinating conjunctions.
  • 10. Future participles and the supine.
  • 11. Future infinitive. Direct questions.
  • 12. Revision.
  • Final test.

Teaching methods
Lectures, practice (translating, grammar exercises). Regular class attendance and homework are required.
Assessment methods
Active class participation (min. 75%) and regular preparation of grammar and translation assignments are the essential requirements for obtaining the credit. The grade is determined by the performance in a final written test where students’ mastery of basic grammar is tested through a translation of a short self-contained Latin passage (dictionaries allowed).
