Course objectives
Students will become familiar with the basic turning points in the development of Greek literature from the Byzantine period until today. Students will get to know certain works of Byzantine and Modern Greek literature through reading of chosen literary extracts (translation into Czech or a world language). Students will be capable of independent work with basic scholarly handbooks of Byzantology and Modern Greek studies and of searching for other information concerning these fields.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to Byzantine literature (development, genres, the role of literature in Byzantine society, role of Byzantine literature in the development of European literature)
  • Significant historical events and personalities of Greek cultural space between the 4th and the 15th century.
  • Greek literature in Diaspora and in the territory under Turkish rule until the 18th century.
  • Emergence and development of Modern Greek literature.
  • Extracts reading (translations).
  • Students’ presentations on Byzantine and Modern Greek literary works (translated into Czech).
