Course objectives

The main objectives of the course are the following: making students aware of historical circumstances of erection and development of Roman provinces in the Middle Danube region; analyzing the impact of expansion of the Roman empire into this region and their effect to the material culture of barbarian tribes; acquainting students with fundamentals of the methodology of so-called provincial-roman archaeology and with the key current scientic problems in these provinces.

Syllabus

• Historical circumstances of the erection of provinces.
• The most important characteristics of Roman provincial culture.
• Comparison of the provincial Roman and barbarian civilisations.
• Interactions between the provincial and barbarian spheres.
