Course objectives
The development of the idea of peace in Europe, internal co-operation and unification of Europe from the Early Modern Age to the 1930s, focusing on projects from the first three decades of the 20th century.
Syllabus
  • Visions, programmes, the construction of co-operation and unification of Europe in historical development. Phases: the Early Modern Age (from Duke de Sully to I. Kant). The Napoleonic Wars and the era of restoration. From vision to analysis (the second half of the 19th century). Changes before the First World War. Reflections during and after the First World War. The penetration of the European idea into diplomatic activity, pan-Europeanism in the interwar period. Motives and directions: the unification of Europe to prevent war. Custom agreements and custom unions, attempts at economic union. The idea of European solidarity. The idea of Europe as a single cultural entity. Problems facing a Franco-German rapprochment and reconcilliation. Unification of Europe as a bulwark against internal dangers, esp new great powers. Concepts of a unified Europe as prevention against stagnation and historical demise. The idea of a twin-track Europe etc. Ideas for an outline of joint pan-European agencies.
