Course objectives
The subject captures the development of the everyday life of High Medieval society in the Czech-speaking countries based on the material culture study in historical context. The introductory block of lectures is devoted to a brief overview of the advancement of civilization in America, Africa and Asia, and to some peculiar civilization manifestations in the integrated European society.
Goals: Essential orientation in the inherent laws of human civilization development; Capability to apply the material culture knowledge in specialist processing of museum collections of historical and archaeological nature

  • The oldest civilizations of America, Anasazi, Maya peoples, Toltecs, Aztecs, Inca
  • Advancement of Asian civilizations; India, China, Japan, Mongols; emergence and development of civilization in Africa
  • Development of civilization in Europe, energy sources, inventions, influence of the Arabic world
  • Vikings, forms of society organization, religion, writing, expansion
  • Crusades, religious pilgrimages
  • Ecclesiastical organization, sacral architecture, liturgy clothing and equipment
  • Long-distance trade, routes, conditions, transport, means of payment, markets
  • Emergence of the Czech state, sovereign, court, nobility – mansions and castles, heraldry, militaria
  • Genesis of a medieval town, economic conditions, urban right, law courts, construction development
  • Crafts – food-making, metal-working, wood-working, leather-processing trades
  • Textile processing trades, clothing
  • Colonization, typology of villages, social structure, agriculture
