- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students will learn the basics of stylistics and its relation to poetics and classical rhetorics. The stress is laid upon understanding the theoretical background of functional stylistics and upon the ability to explain its basis. Students will be able to apply this on concrete tasks by making stylistic interpretations of various types of texts. They will be able to characterize the basis of general style norms as well as norms typical for particular languages and to evaluate their relevancy. They will be able to apply on their own the knowledge acquired during the course (including that of theoretical concepts explained by the teacher) and the knowledge of secondary literature. Moreover, they will be able to use this knowledge to formulate their own conclusions in their works and, to compare them in discussion with conclusions previously arrived at by others and to evaluate them objectively and competently.
- Syllabus
- Main topics: theoretical basics of stylistics; status of stylistics among other linguistic disciplines; stylistics in the study of language and in literary studies; applied stylistics; different conceptions of stylistics; its relation to rhetoric and to theory of communication; functional stylistics as one possible approach to the field.
