- Course objectives
- The course is aimed at students who have already completed introductory courses in dialectology and wish to develop their knowledge further on, paying attention especially to issues of Czech as well as of Slavonic dialectology. Students will be acquainted with methods of gathering and processing dialectal vocabulary and with possibilities of creating various kinds of dictionaries and handbooks. The seminar will first of all deal with issues of Czech dialectal lexicography – with its history, development, results and perspectives; these issues will then be put into a wider Slavonic context (Slavonic dialectal dictionaries, dialectal vocabulary in the Slavonic Language Atlas etc.) and will offer a comparative view of these topics. Students will be orientated towards and independent approach to the gathered language material – the acquired knowledge and skills will be proved in a seminar work the topic of which can be chosen from two basic ranges (either gathering and processing a part of dialectal vocabulary relating to a selected sphere or processing a part of a dialectal vocabulary in the Slavonic context).
- Syllabus
- The course covers the following topics: 1. Basic terminology of the discipline 2. The development of Czech dialectal lexicography – a brief history of the discipline, basic sources. 3. The methodology of gathering dialectal vocabulary. 4. Types of dialectal dictionaries – specific features of their compilation 5. An overview of significant Czech dialectal dictionaries 6. Dialectal dictionaries of Slavonic languages 7. The Slavonic Language Atlas – lexical volumes. 8. Perspectives of Czech and Slavonic dialectal lexicography
