Course objectives
The course outlines the most important religious traditions of the West since the ancient times up to the present day. The main attention is paid to those of Judaism, Christianity and Islam which have strongly influenced the present forms of the Euro-American civilization. The course also provides an illustrative selection of textual and pictorial sources.
Main objectives of the course:
At the end of the course students should:
- be familiar with the basic factual knowledge of the most important religious traditions of the West;
- be familiar with the basic terminology used in the study of the Western religious traditions;
- have the capacity of critical work with basic information on Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Syllabus
  • (1) The Way of Israel toward monotheism. (2) Ancient mystery cults. (3) Scripture and law in the history of Judaism. (4) Kabbalah – the Jewish mysticism. (5) The ancient gnosis and its followers. (6) The origins and the development of Christianity until the Middle Ages. (7) The development of Christian rituals. (8) Reformation and Counter-Reformation. (9) Transformations of modern Christianity. (10) The rise and the splitting of Islam. (11) Islam and the clash of civilizations? (12) New religious movements. (13) Final test.
