- Course objectives
- At the end of the course, students should be able to explain the development of medieval Latin literature in the High Middle Ages; to name and arrange in a chronological order the main authors of medieval Latin prose and poetry; to describe their work and its importance; to interpret the most important writings of the 12th and 13th centuries.
- Syllabus
- 1) The most important genres of Latin literature in the 12th century (hagiography, historiography, secular and religious lyrics, scientific literature) and their significant authors
- 2) Specific features of the literature in the 12th century
- 3) Prominent centers of translation (Salerno and Toledo)
- 4) Reception of Greek and Arabic scientific literature and their impact on the development of European science
- 5) Relations between Latin literature and arising national literatures
- 6) The so-called humanism of the 12th century
- 7) 13th century - overview; encyclopaedias; high scholastic; poetics; rhetoric

- Teaching methods
- Lecture, reading (translation), class discussion on the given subject.
- Assessment methods
- Regular attendence and active class participation (min. 75%); translation and interpretation of a selected text (20 min); oral exam (colloquium, 10 min) - students should prove their knowledge of the development of the main genres of medieval literature, the most important authors and important cultural centers of medieval Europe.
