- Course objectives
- At the end of the course, students will be able to understand the language situation in North American. They will appreciate the current situation int he context of diverse historical, social, economic and political changes. The course deals with various aspects of multilingualism in Canada, USA and Mexico and notes the mutual position of the individual languages in various areas of the continent.
- Syllabus
- The course will cover some of the following topics: 1. Linguistic situation in USA 2. Linguistic situation in Canada 3. Linguistic situation in Mexico 4. Multilingualism in the modern society 5. Historical overview of colonial influences 6. Code-mixing and code-switching 7. Dialectology in North America 8. Multilingualism of ethnic and marginal groups 9. African American English in the USA - historical sources, social migration, current situation, future trends 10. Lecture by a visiting professor 11. Lecture by a visiting professor 12. Group work - dicussion and presentation of independent reading 13. Multilingualism, language change, language policy
