- Course objectives
- The course will concentrate on a detailed analysis of the establishment and the activity of the vindicatory courts in the Czech lands and Slovakia in 1945-1948 with a special focus on some specifics cases heard at the Extraordinary People's Court in Brno in this period. Students will get a review of the post-war court sanctions of the Nazi war criminals and quislings in Czechoslovakia and experience in working with sources related with this topic.
- Syllabus
- 1) Introduction to the topic and the archive institutions keeping the sources related to the vindicatory courts with the focus on the territory on Moravia.
- 2) The president's decrees as the basic legal rules of retribution; their character, specifics and the history of the Great and Small Retribution Decree.
- 3) The activity of the Commitee for the prosecution of war criminals; the role of Bohuslav Ečer.
- 4) The establishment and the activity of the extraordinary people's courts in the Czech lands in 1945-1947, the operation of the Extraordinary People's Court in Brno in this period.
- 5) The comparison of the situation in the Czech lands and Slovakia.
- 6) Categories of people affected by the retributions.
- 7) The course of the renewed phase of retributions in 1948.
- 8) The destiny of the retribution prisoners in Czechoslovak prisons.
- 9) The sanctions against war criminals in Czechoslovakia and other countries occupied by the Nazi Germany.
- 10) Final conclusion and discussion about the topic "justice or revenge?"

- The course is carried out in form of seminars. Students will have to prepare an seminar work based on archival materials.
- Assessment methods
- The classification will evaluate attendance which will be proved by signatures on the attendance lists. The course is succesfully completed by written test examining the student´s elementary knowledge of the subject.
