Course objectives

Roman law represents one of the cornerstones of European culture. Students will get acquainted with the development and system of Roman law, as well as the basic institutions of private and public law. The focus will be on the devlopment of particular fields of law and their institutions, which is important for the understanding of the history of the whole Roman society. We will deal with the particular institutions on the basis of legal and narrative sources. At the end of the course students should have an overviwe of the development of particular fields of law and be able to analyze and interpret the texts of Roman lawyers.

• Periods in the development of Roman law.
• Roman state system.
• Roman state system according to Polybius.
• The sources of law.
• Legal condition of persons.
• Roman family law.
• The development of adjective law - from the self-help to the judge.
• Law of property.
• Law of obligations.
• Law of heirship.
