- Course objectives
- Student will be able to understand the importance of the of Germanic barbarian states for the development in Europe after the so called fall of the Roman Empire in the West and to discuss it;
to evaluate the ancient heritage and the role of Roman law in the early Medieval Age;
to compare the ancient and "barbarian" elements od early medieval development;
better evaluate the typical attributes of the transitive periods of history generally. - Syllabus
- 1) The Franks and the Roman Empire.
- 2)The conversion of the Franks to the Christianity.
- 3)The state of Franks, its institutions, society and economy, the Roman and Germanic elements in its structure.
- 4)The importance of the empire of Franks in the history of Western and Middle Europe.
- 5)The missions supported by Franks.
- 6)Angles, Jutes and Saxons in Roman Britain.
- 7) Langobards and their state: the really break of the continuity of ancient tradition?
- 8) The confederacy of the tribes of Allemani.
- 9) The polytheism of Germans.
- 10)The conversion of Germans to Christianity -- from Bavaria to Greenland.
- 11) The state and law of barbarians (general analysis).
- 12) The role of barbarians in the decline of Western Roman Empire.
- 13) Their credits of the conservation of ancient culture.
