Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain the not only "external" political history of Latvia and Estonia from the XVIII to the beginning of the 20th century, but also the "inner", i. e. cultural history of the same period.
Syllabus
  • Themes: 1. Cultural situation of Latvia and Estonia in 18th century 2. Cultural situation of Latvia and Estonia in the beginning of 19th century 3. National revival in culture, literature etc. 4. Tsarist regime versus Latvian and Estonian culture 5. Fin de siecle in cultural life of Baltic countries 6. Cultural contacts between Baltic lands and Czechoslovakia / Czech Republic
