Course objectives
The course is conceived as a practical seminar/workshop and it focuses on a hands-on approach to the audiovisual translation, e.i. translation of subtitles of an Italian film with particular emphasis on the different aspects of morphology, syntax and stylistics in Czech and Italian in regard with the specific characteristics of audiovisual translation. The students will be producing a group translation and subtitles for the assigned film.
Syllabus
  • - viewing of the film, learning about the author - analysis of the linguistic side of the film - specific traits of the AV translation - collective work on the subtitles - collective correction of the subtitles, work with the subtitling software

Teaching methods
Seminars: Students prepare in advance by viewing the film, a major part of the course will be taken up by discussion of translation problems occurring in the assigned film. Through argumentation the students will choose the best of the suggested translation solutions.
Assessment methods
The assessment will be based both on the student's in-class participation in the workshop and the final translation. The attendance is compulsory.
