Course objectives
A series of lectures concentrates on the development of military and conflicts since Punic Wars to 6th century AD. Gravity of interpretation is mainly focused on specific military campaigns, battles, and a description of historical military tactics and strategy. Students should get an overview of the most important battles and military clashes of ancient Rome in the reporting period of history, including the understanding of fundamental political and social contexts that directly related to the other studied wars.
Learning outcomes
The student wiil be able to orient in the political and military history of of the ancient Rome and Mediterranean.

  • 1. Punic Wars (1st, 2nd and 3rd Punic War Punic War) 2. The expansion of the Roman Republic (Macedonian Wars, Syrian War, Jugurthine War, Cimbrian War) 3. Decline of the Roman republic (Social War, civil wars, Spartacus) 4. Caesar and Second triumvirate 5. The Rise and Fall of the Julian - Claudian dynasty 6. Two new dynasties (Flavian dynasty and Nerva - Antonine dynasty) 7. Marcus Aurelius and Severan dynasty 8. Crisis of the Third Century (selected military emperors) 9. Roman Tetrarchy and Constantinian dynasty 10. Beginning of Migration Period 11. The end of Western Roman Empire 12. Development of the ancient Roman Army 13. Credit test
