- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is: to exercise reading and translating of an unknown Classical Latin text of intermediate difficulty or a simple Medieval Latin text into Czech with the assistance of a dictionary; to explain the basic oddities in the graphical form of Medieval Latin.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students will be able to: read and translate an unknown Classical Latin text of intermediate difficulty or a simple Medieval Latin text into Czech with the assistance of a dictionary; comprehend the basic oddities in the graphical form of Medieval Latin.
- Syllabus
- 1. introduction to translation – selecting a dictionary, interdisciplinary aspects and the purpose of the translation; knowledge of Latin editions 2. revision and practical application of the topics explained during the three previous Latin courses – translation of short, coherent texts written in Classical and Medieval Latin; the texts are excerpted e.g. from these works: Caesar – Commentarii de Bello Gallico; Cicero – Tusculanae disputationes; Biblia sacra iuxta vulgatam versionem; Hus´s letters; Petrus Alphonsi – Disciplina clericalis.

- One 1.5-hour class per week consisting of a lecture and a seminar.
- Assessment methods
- Credit requirements: regular class attendance (75%); oral colloquium which will examine the ability to translate a short Latin text with the assistance of a dictionary and explain the grammatical elements contained in the text.
