Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able understand the hypertextual nature of Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman's film script and the film Shakespeare in Love (directed by John Madden). They will be able to discuss and further explore the multidimensional allusions to Romeo and Juliet against the backdrop of Renaissance theatre in England and Shakespeare's life and work. Students will be able to make deductions about Stoppard's treatment of Shakespeare within the hypertextual framework of recent Shakespearean criticim and debate in literary and cultural studies. The course will develop the students' skills of critical thinking, literary analysis and work with secondary literature, which they will be able to apply not least in writing their end-ef-term essay.
