- Course objectives
- Course explains the evolution of Christian Church since 313 in specific terms of Byzantine Empire within 1453. Special attention is paid to seven ecumenical councils, acknowledged by the Orthodox Church. Gradual accretion of differences between the western and eastern Churches is analyzed within the framework of lectures, resulting even in ecclesiastical schism. Attention is paid to the orthodox liturgy and its graphic art and architecture. Interpretation of the history of old oriental Churches and Balkan autokephal ones of Bulgaria and Serbia are the integral part of lectures, inclusive their graphic art and architectural specifics. Course is focused also to the evolution of the Orthodox Church within the terms of Ottoman Empire and its influence to preservation of national identity for Balkan nations as well as to the establishment of national myths promoted by the Orthodox Church (e.g. the Kosovo myth). After completing the course the absolvent would be capable to explain the relation between the Orthodox Church and Islam, pertinently between the Christianity and Islam in said Ottoman Empire, having orientation in the history of Orthodoxy, being capable to interpret the role of Orthodoxy in modern history of Balkan states.
