The course is aimed at beginners and does not therefore require any previous knowledge of Latin language.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the system of Latin language, to explain the position of Latin among other Indoeuropean languages as well as to point out the influence of Latin on the development of Czech language. The subject is intended for students who are interested in ancient history and who want to acquire the background for future studying of Latin. At the end of course the student will be able to use basic Latin grammar terminology, to read basic Latin texts, to translate simple phrases and short sentences from Latin to Czech language using Latin-Czech dictionary and nominal and verb paradigms. An active knowledge of Latin vocabulary will not be required.
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able:
to characterize the system of Latin language;
to summarize the main features of Latin declension and conjugation;
to use basic Latin grammar terminology;
to translate simple text from Latin to Czech language;
to describe the main features of the influence of Latin on the development of Czech language.
Syllabus
  • 1. Latin and its position among Indoeropean languages; the benefit of Latin for the development of Eropean civilisation. The development of Latin language and its periodisation. 2. The outline of grammatical categories, basic terminology. The pronunciation of Latin, Latin alfabet. 3. Introduction to Latin declension. Nouns of 1st – 5th declension. 4. Introduction to Latin conjugation. Verbs of the 1st – 4th conjugation. 5. Pronominal declension. Anthroponyms in Rome. 6. Adjective declension. Roman numerals. 7. Introduction to Latin tenses. Roman weight and measures. 8. Indefinite verb forms. Pompeian inscriptions. 9. Numerals. Roman calendar. 10. Selected syntactic constructions (accusative-with-indefinite and nominative-with-infinitive constructions, the ablative absolute. Translation of selected Latin quote. 11. Influence of Latin to Czech language. Latin phrases in present Czech language and their meaning. 12. Working with selected texts. Samples from classic Roman quantitative poetry.
