- Course objectives
- The aim of the course named Problems of the French sociolinguistics is to make students acquainted with the backgrounds of contemporary developments and trends in spoken French, namely with social dialectology – slang, cant - with emphasis placed on generationally and socially conditioned sociolects. Students should be able to define basic terms of a sociolinguistics and to orient themselves in an ethno-geo-socioeconomical differenciation of French society. When analyzing particular texts and exercises, he or she should be able to apply these terms and deduce from the observed phenomena the proper conclusions. At the end of this course, students will be able to deduce and explain the rules of basic functionning of psycho-social ties relevant to a youth speech. He or she will be able justify and bring serious arguments to support his or her thesis. Eventually, he or she will be able to propose a solution in accord with the standard.

- Teaching methods
- Application of theoretical knowledge of on authentic texts. During their presentations students show their ability to interconnect on their own their theoretical knowledge and practical analysis of a specific text.
- Assessment methods
- Seminar attendance is mandatory (80%). Colloquium – two group seminar papers - a) translation and sociolectal analysis of selected rap lyrics, b) work on a lexicographical databasis of substandard French.
