Course objectives
The course brings an introduction to the study of Christian missions in the world during the Middle Ages and Early Modern era. At the end of this course, students should be able to: understand the multifaceted character of missions as activities within specific historical, religious, social and political context; to explain motifs and circumstances of main missionary enterprises; to reflect political and social aspects of missions both in Europe as well as in cultures where evangelization takes place; to undestand the problems of usage of missionary reports as sources for research in religious studies.
Syllabus
  • 0. introductory lecture, the pespectives of the study of Christian missions, conditions of the spread of Christianity in early period 1. Medieval missions to Asia - Mongols and Europe, missionaries in India, attitudes toward non-Christians 2. The conquest of America - the problem of "the Other", Christianity in Latin America 3. Portuguese mission in India - accommodation 4. Christian Missions in China - Matteo Ricci, the Chinese rites controversy. 5. Christian missions in Tibet and Ladakh - Capuchins and Jesuits in Tibet, mission of Moravian Brethren. 6. Contemporary missions - papal documents Ad gentes, Nostra Aetate, Evangelii Nuntiandi, the issue of inculturation. 7. Concluding lecture, test.
