- Course objectives
- The course is focused on the main components of medieval towns – square, street network, town hall and emporium. It introduces ancient cities, first urban formations in Europe and the emergence of institutional towns. Also important is the environment of medieval towns and multidisciplinary research on individual aspects.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
1) Understand and explain the urbanisation process from its beginning to the end of the Middle Ages and its reflection in archaeological sources.
2) Understand the significance of archaeological sources for understanding the formation of the town.
3) Formulate the knowledge acquired by studying the recommended literature on a selected problem and set the results of this study into a wider context.
4) Compare scholarly opinions on the selected problem. - Syllabus

- 3. First urban formations in Central and East Europe
- 4. First urban formations in the Czech lands
- 5. Emergence of institutional towns in West Europe, Polish lands and Hungary
- 6. Founding of communal towns in the Czech lands
- 7. Research on medieval towns
- 8. Urban plan and basic components of medieval towns. Square, streets, town hall and emporium.

- 10. Environment of medieval towns, waste disposal, water management. Urban fortification.
- 11. Production and exchange in medieval towns.
- 12. Church in towns. Medieval townspeople in the light of archaeology and natural sciences.
