- Course objectives
- The goal of this course is to discover comparative literature (the evolution of the fantastique novel): Why was/is it successful in French and Czech literature? Other national literature would eventually be addressed. The study of the texts include literature in translation: why read a translation? What does a translation involve from the point of view of a commentary?
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, the student will be familiar with comparative literature and its methods. He/She will be able to: - contextualize literary works - characterize the fantastique genre and understand its ideology. - produce a comparative analysis - evaluate a literary translation - discuss a question from the course
- Syllabus
- Textual analysis will be performed in class under the shape of discussion, example of analysis: - birth of the "fantastique" novel - the goal of the fantastique novel in culture - the significance of fantastique patterns - revisionism of history from the fantastique genre - how did the fantastique genre evolve etc.
- Teaching methods
- Preparations before lessons are mandatory to fully comprehend the lesson and to be able to discuss the subject in small groups.
- Assessment methods
- The writing exam will be a literary analysis/ comparative analysis which will be due at the end of the semester. (50% of the final mark) The oral exam will be evaluated by the presentation realised by the student during the semester. (50% of the final mark)
