- Course objectives
- The content of the course is theoretical and practical familiarization of students with the selected challenges in the field of Czech orthography from contemporary standards and codification point of view. The selected problems include those ones, where there are made a lot of mistakes in practice or that are insufficiently taught in secondary schools. The aim of the course is to make possible for students to skilfully express themselves in writing, to be able to think about written form of language in the context and to know how to deal with cases when basic language manuals can’t provide clear information. The choice of some topics can also be influenced by students during the course.
- Learning outcomes
- After finishing the course, the student will be able:
- to confidently express himself in writing;
- to write at a good orthographic level;
- to better understand various doublets or unclear orthographic phenomena;
- to deal with cases that are not mentioned in basic language manuals (for example, by analogy with already known examples) and to know where to find the information if necessary;
- to make a basic correction of somebody else’s text. - Syllabus
- 1. The introduction to the topic, familiarization with the basic literature, the last orthography reform (1993) and its impacts, basic terms, entrance dictation;
- 2. spelling of prepositions s/z and prefixes s-/z-/vz-; spelling of u/ú/ů in the roots of Czech and foreign words;
- 3. spelling of i/y, í/ý in the roots of Czech and foreign words; spelling of bě/bje, vě/vje, mě/mně, pě/pje, fě, zje;
- 4. capital letters writing problems;
- 5. spelling of abbreviations, signs and abbreviated words; problems of word boundaries in writing—to hyphenate / to write as one word, writing of compound words (adverbial and other), their doublets;
- 6. spelling of consonant clusters and double consonants; spelling of loanwords, their doublets;
- 7. problems of commas in the simple sentence;
- 8. problems of commas in the compound sentence;
- 9. writing of i/y in verbs—concord of subject and predicate;
- 10. typography basics and documents’ correction—hyphenation, inappropriate words and signs at the end of lines, correct writing of correct punctuation marks, documents editing.
- The topic order and the time devoted to each topic is determined by the lecturer according to students’ wishes. On students’ request some topics can be cut out and other topics alternatively can be added.

- Teaching methods
- Each class of the course includes short theoretical comments of the lecturer to certain discussed fields (in a form of brief presentations broadened with handout for support students) that are followed by individual work in a form of practical exercises. The materials to topics and exercises will be provided to learners, students will also prepare for classes by practicing and studying at home.
- Assessment methods
- Teaching is in the form of exercises, so the attendance is compulsory. Two absences, not including the introductory lecture, are allowed. The final test comprises of dictation and gap filling exercises. For passing the credit the student must have a minimum of 65% of the test correct.
