Course objectives
It is an introductory course into the linguistic study of sign languages. The students will learn basic terms and issues in the field of sign language phonology. They will make themselves familiar with the inventory of CSL phonemes and the principle of the dual articulation in a natural language (using the method of the minimal pairs). Examples from CSL will be provided.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student is able to analyze a CSL lexical unit a structure built of parameters. The student understands the role of a phoneme and he can describe it using a CSL example.

  • terminology, notation of examples using glosses; phonemes in audio-oral and visual-motoric languages; simultaneity and sequence; SL typology; phonological constrains on SLs; manual part of the sign; handshape; place of articulation; movement; syllable in SL; hand orientation, non-manual parts; speech and oral components; phonetic and phonological changes in SLs
