Basic knowledge of the ancient Greek and Roman archeology in the extent of the courses KLA_001 - Introduction to Classical Archaeology is obligated.

Course objectives
The main objective of the course is an excursion organized for educational purposes to make clear connections between theory and practice in classical archaeology.
Within the excursion students visit the nearest and most important museums, exhibitions and archaeological sites from the ancient period in the Middle Europe.
Another important practical aspect is familiarizing students with the presentation of classical archeology to the public in various memory institutions.
This type of short-term excursion is primarily focused on the presentation of antique collections and movable archaeological finds in the form of permanent exhibitions (Kunsthistorisches Museum and Römermuseum Wien, Ancient Art Gallery in Hostinné and Duchcov Castle, collections and permanent museum expositions in Bratislava, Budapest, Mikulov ...) or on the current museum exhibitions and actual events that are related to topics within the scope of the study programm classical archaeology.
Learning outcomes
After successfull passing the course, students will be able to:
- test the theoretical knowledge and apply it on practical exapmles - in museums, depositories or exibitions
- describe and characterize visited monuments, collections and displayed artefacts in a more advanced way
- understand the archaeological artefacts and monuments in a wider context
- understand major prinicples and ways of presenting of archaeological collections, artefacts and monuments in a wider context
- ask targeted questions during the excursion and discuss
Syllabus
  • 1. Preparation of study materials and heuristics for the current excursion
  • 2. Excursion with professional commentary, which will be provided by the students of master's study programs supervised by the tutor
  • 3. Collecting and elaborating materials for short excursion reports

Teaching methods
Basic theoretical training and heuristics
Practical training in a form of excursion and exposition, active collaborative participation on solving partial research assignments, reporting, discussion
Assessment methods
Active participation by writing a small note about visited museums, collections or exhibitions (short texts and photo materials for elaborating an excursion report) are the obvious conditions for successful fulfilment.
