Course objectives
The main focus of the course is acquainting students with historical metamorphoses of the music structuring. The aim is the practical understanding of music forms in the time period since Middle Ages until today and obtaining proper analytical skills.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course students will be able to: - identify in the notation the basic forms of West-European music, - explain the origin and development of these musical forms, - independently analyze musical compositions based on notated and recorded music.
Syllabus
  • Secular song of 12-20th century. Madrigal, chanson. Variation forms - passacaglia, ciaccona. Dance music of 16th and 17th century - Suite. Opera, oratorio. Rondeau forms - Sonata form (cantata, toccata), sonata cycle. Concerto grosso - concerto. Symphony, symphonic poem. Music form/structure in 20th century (serial music, "moment form", aleatory/stochastic music etc.).

Teaching methods
Practical seminar of the musical form analysis. Analysis of the crucial music forms of 16th-20th century.
Assessment methods
An individual oral exam is required for obtaining the credit. The oral exam consists of two parts: a) theoretical - student explains selected music form, b) practical - showing ability of music form indentification in a printed score.
