Course objectives
In the real conditions of systematic archaeological excavations of the Rokštejn Castle the students apply their current theoretical and practical knowledge of field theory and practice, geodesy and material culture. The high medieval and late medieval archaeological contexts are practical aspects of the multi-stratified historical building and its free and operating space. Students are involved in fieldwork, preparation of individual contexts and their documentation (drawing and photographic), total station surveying and evaluation of data in the GIS. They take part in other post-excavation works such as sorting, washing and inventorying of material (artefacts). They take part in primary documentation of artefacts (description, photographing and 3D modelling) for other analyses with instruments used in the laboratory of ceramics and archaeobotany in Panská Lhota.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, student will be able to:
- choose an appropriate method of field research
- make on-site documentation
- capture in photographs the key contexts on site
- identify archaeological artefacts, keep them safe and treat them in a laboratory
- take samples for environmental analyses
- enter the information on terrain contexts, finds and samples into a database
