Course objectives
The course is the entry into the issue of ethno-musicology as one of the ethnological sub-disciplines. The students will learn about the historical development of ethno-musicology, with its basic terminology, applied methods and key themes of ethno-musicological research.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to interpret basic topics of Czech and European ethnomusicology.

  • 1. History of etnomusicological research in Czech lands.
  • 2. The collecting and collectors of folk songs. Institutions and editorial work.
  • 3. Methods and techniques used in field research.
  • 4. Audio and audiovisual documentation.
  • 5. Cataloguing texts and tunes of folk songs.
  • 6. Theory of folk songs.
  • 7. Instruments used in performing folk music, types of music bands.
  • 8. Types and genres of songs.
  • 9. Contemporary melodiousness and song repertoire composition.
  • 10. Folk song as a source of inspiration, popularization.
  • 11. Second existence of folk song, folklorism.
