- Course objectives
- This is a survey course of Italian literature through its major authors and literary movements. From the Renaissance to the end of the 19th century Italian Literature This course provides a chronological and comprehensive view of Italian literature and its major authors and trends, in their literary and historical context from the 15-16th century to the end of 19th Century. In the course a wide selection of literature pieces are studied.
- Learning outcomes
- The purpose of this course is to acquaint students with the history of Italian literature and to provide them with the critical tools needed to analyze major Italian literary works. Students are also guided to the study of the basics of prosody, philology and stylistic analysis.
- Syllabus
- Main topics covered in the course: - Definition of Humanism and Renaissance, the study of the main features of the movements and on their representative authors. Excerpts from the works of Angelo Poliziano, Lorenzo il Magnifico, Niccolò Machiavelli and Ludovico Ariosto will be read; - The literature from the Age of Counter-Reformations. Readings from the works of Torquato Tasso, Galilei Galileo and Torquato Accetto; - An introduction to the literature of the Eighteenth Century; - Ugo Foscolo, Giacomo Leopardi, Alessandro Manzoni; - Carlo Porta, Giuseppe GioachinoBelli; - La Scapigliatura; - Giovanni Verga.

- Teaching methods
- The course will be held in Italian. Literary texts will be read in Italian. Students will receive weekly assignments and are expected to actively participate in the class discussions. Students are strongly requested to attend the seminars on Italian literature planned for the Spring Semester 2022.
- Assessment methods
- Attendance and active participation in class discussion. Final oral exam on all the topics studied in the course. For the final exam students are also expected to prepare an oral presentation on a topic pre-agreed with the teacher.
