Course objectives
The course deals with the word as the basic linguistic unit. Most of linguistic analyses are done with a reference to the word, but words are also the first thing we learn in a language, and even the layman knows that it is words that make languages different. Still there is no single and uniform definition of the word and its analysis. Therefore, the course looks critically into the concept of the word and analyzes its structure and the way new words are formed.
Learning outcomes
By passing the course the students will
- gain the knowledge of approaches to the word and to the role it plays or does not play in linguistics
- be able to critically evaluate the pros and cons of the various theories and definitions of the word
- understand the inner structure of the word
- gain the knowledge of the ways new words are formed in various languages of the world
