- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to make students acquainted with the backgrounds of lexical variation and with an actual (and historical) dictionary production. Students should be able to define basic terms of a lexicology. When analyzing particular texts and exercises, he or she should be able to apply these terms and deduce from the observed phenomena the proper conclusions about the typology and dynamics of vocabulary and about the characteristics of French dictionaries.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, students will be able to deduce and explain the rules of basic lexicologic phenomena and to use effectively French dictionary resources.
- Syllabus
- Synchronic approach – presentation of the categories of lexical semantic description (synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, homonymy, etc.)
- Diachronic approach – classification of semantic shifts.
- Regional, generational, social and stylistic variation.
- Emphasizing the practical importance of lexicological research for the quality of lexicographical production.
- Characteristics of French dictionaries.
- Special attention will be devoted to the problem of the word as a unit of description of language, due to its limited phonetic and syntactic autonomy.

- Teaching methods
- Application of theoretical knowledge on authentic texts. During their presentations students show their ability to interconnect on their own their lexicographical knowledge and practical analysis of specific occurrences.
- Assessment methods
- Credit – fulfilling weekly tasks, working on semestral project, short final test. Lecture and seminar attendance is mandatory (80%).
