Course objectives
The course will bring a cross-section of the diverse art genres of the second half of the 20th century – painting, sculpture, installation, design, architecture, and to some extent also poetry, dance and digital art – which used elements of processuality, performativity and theatricality and are related to the contemporary development of visual art. It will be introduced by a mention of the post-war origins of performativity associated with American action painting and its media picture which, at the time, promoted the phenomenon as an important sphere of contemporary art. Lectures will explore the development of theatricalisation and processuality in American Pop Art painting and spatial art. The Fluxus movement phenomenon will be mentioned and special attention will be paid to the work of the Arte Povera artists; but the focus will be on the influence of these movements on the thought development in Italian design in the 1960s and 1970s. Examples of design or architecture, particularly in the 1970s, that used performativity to draw attention to the social, political or gender aspects of the field in question, will be another important topic. The lecture series will also include an introduction to the postmodern tendency towards a more synthetic form and theatricalization of the artwork. In the course, examples of international art of a performative nature will be paralleled by information about comparable work by artists on the domestic scene. The course will pay particular attention to photography, film, and video as important recording media necessary for the documentation and presentation of this kind of works.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able:
To comprehend an important tendency of art and visual culture of the second half of the 20th century. They will understand the connection of domestic artistic production of a performative character with similar tendencies in European and American art. The lectures will provide students with a better and deeper understanding of the development of visual art and thought in the second half of the twentieth century.

  • • Action painting, Pop Art performative tendencies and their media presentation in the United States after World War II
  • • Visual poetry and Fluxus activities overreaching into performativity and installation in the European and domestic contexts
  • • Overlaps of Arte povera in design and architecture on the Italian and Austrian scenes; their equivalents in Czechoslovak art
  • • Postmodern tendencies towards synthetic, structured works overlapping in theatricality and performance
