Course objectives
The aim of the course si to encourage students to attend the Summer School of Classical studies, organized by the Centre for Classical Studies at the Institute of Philosophy of Czech Academy of Sciences. Students have a unique opportunity to listen to the most varied interdisciplinary lectures and meet people interested in classical philology, ancient culture and its heritage from the Middle Ages through renaissance humanism up to the present.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to:
sum up content of individual lectures in their own words.

Other learning outcomes depend on actual topics of lectures and seminars.
Syllabus
  • The summer school always has a unifying topic. The summer school consist of lectures, but sometimes also reading of the thematically related original texts. In general, the following topics appear:
  • Heritage of Antiquity in the medieval thought and art;
  • Latin scientific writings;
  • Medieval music;
  • Ancient motifs in modern art;
  • Historical and culture historical topics (personality of Charles IV, reformation, function of monasteries in the Middle Ages, etc.);
  • Late Antiquity;
  • Renaissance Latin.
Literature
  • Literatura se liší podle tematického zaměření letní školy.
Teaching methods
Lectures, reading Latin texts.
Assessment methods
Essay on one of delivered topics. Class attendance: at least 20 hours.
