- The goal of the course is to introduce students to important texts in applied ethics.
- Learning outcomes
- The successful student will be able to read and interpret English texts in applied ethics and explain the key concepts.
- Syllabus
- The reading materials may include:
- Aquinas on suicide
- Kant on suicide
- Rachels - More Impertinent Distinctions and a Defense of Active Euthanasia
- Marquis - An Argument that Abortion is Wrong
- Mill - A Speech in Favour of Capital Punishment
- Bedau - The Case Against the Death Penalty
- Regan - The Case for Animal Rights
- Machan - Do Animals Have Rights?
- Leopold - The Land Ethic
- Fieser - An Argument Against Normative Ecocentrism
- It is possible that some other relevant readings may be used instead of the above, if plausible.

- reading and interpretation, discussion
- Assessment methods
- Written test, open questions , min. 60 percent to pass. Attendance max. 2 unexcused absences. Combined students three in-term quizzes, min. 60 percent in total to pass. Passing these is a condition for taking the final test.
