Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to professional terminology in the fields of auxiliary historical sciences and archivial science in German. This course follows on from the course German Terminology of Auxiliary Historical Sciences and Archival Science I and deals specifically with sphragistics, heraldry, genealogy, historical metrology, numismatics and epigraphy, and also the fundamentals of archival science theory and practice.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- be familiar with the professional vocabulary of individual auxiliary historical sciences in German and able to actively use it;
- read a specialized text from the relevant auxiliary historical science (at the level of university textbooks, standard manuals and even scholarly studies);
- compose a shorter professional text in German (at the level of a summary or an academic paper).

  • 2. Sphragistics: definition of the field and its development with an emphasis on German-speaking countries, sphragistic terminology; examples and practice of seal description in German.
  • 3. Heraldry: definition of the field and its development with an emphasis on German-speaking countries; heraldic terminology.
  • 4. Heraldry: examples and practice of blazons in German.
  • 5. Genealogy: genealogical terminology; reading German genealogical sources.
  • 6. Historical metrology: metrological terminology; nomenclature of historical measures and weights in German.
  • 7. Numismatics: definition of the field and its development with an emphasis on German-speaking countries, sphragistic terminology; examples and practice of seal description in German.
  • 8. Epigraphy: definition of the field and its development with an emphasis on German-speaking countries, epigraphic terminology; examples and practice of describing an inscription monument in German.
  • 9. Diplomatics of the modern period - Aktenkunde: definition of the field and its development with an emphasis on German-speaking countries; typology of modern documents in German; examples and practice of describing modern official documents.
  • 10. Archival science theory and practice: basic archival science terminology.
  • 11. Archival science theory and practice: reading specialized texts from archival science theory.

Teaching methods
- Vocabulary self-study, reading selected textbooks and handbook texts at home, preparation of answers to questions on these texts.
- Group reading of scholarly texts during the seminar, basic discussions on them in German.
- Group practice of describing scripts, manuscripts, filigrees, charters or other diplomatic relics, analysing historical dating in German.
Assessment methods
The conditions for awarding credit for the course are active participation in seminars, homework (reading texts, answering questions, writing short excerpts from specialized texts) and a test of knowledge of professional terminology and the ability to work with a specialized text.
