Course objectives
This aim of this course is to provide students with the principles of punctuation in Italian and give them a useful instrument to develop their writing competence. In fact punctuation in Czech is different from punctuation in Italian.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students will be able to -understand the theoretical aspects of Italian punctuation -identify in context the practical aspects of punctuation -identify standard and non-standard use of punctuation -use with accuracy punctuation marks in texts written in Italian Language. -write with accuracy long sentences and texts in Italian with the help of their knoweldge about Italian punctuation.
Syllabus
  • 1)Italian punctuation: the way it works in a sentence. 2) The way punctuation works in a text and in different type of texts (argumentative, narrative, descriptive etc). 3) Standard and non-standard use of punctuation in Italian. 4) How punctuation marks work with coordinative and subordinative sentences. 5) Special focus on the use of comma and colon. 6) Comparison between Italian and Czech punctuation system.

Teaching methods
Class discussions with analysis of puctuation in different Italian types of text: literature, essays, articles from newspapers etc. Written exercises during classes and at home. Students have to read and study the following pages: FERRARI, Angela, ZAMPESE, Luciano. Grammatica: parole, frasi, testi dell'italiano. Roma: Carocci editore, 2016. pp 295-313, 327-336.
Assessment methods
Attendance is mandatory (at least 75%, max. three absences accepted). Proactive participation in class discussions is expected. Tasks and written assignments will be evaluated during the course. Written test at the end of the course.
