Course objectives
The seminar relates to the basic linguistic preparation and is considered to be an introduction to problems of professional translation. Students will get acquainted with the basic characteristics of the professional literature style in Czech and Russian languages. Working on seminars is focused on:
- teaching students to analyse a special text;
- the confrontation of sameness and differences between the two distinct language systems and the context;
- the introduction to methods and crucial work technics while translating texts;
- its specific features understanding and its adequate translation from the source language (foreign) into object language (mother tongue).
Methods of translation are learnt from specific texts of certain thematical spheres. Functional grammar and lexicology: an acquirement of basic linguistic instruments in professional and scientific expressing, application technical standards for formal editing of the specialized translation. Grammatical phenomena found in lexical material of the subject. The emphasis is out on the work with dictionaries.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student will be able:
- to understand the source language and to determine typological criteria (language function; content, linguistic and stylistic, formal and aesthetic, as well as, pragmatic characteristic);
- to understand the meaning of the source text and to express it in the object language without interference;
- to research the thematical sphere and to choose appropriate solution, for example, in the sphere of terminology;
- to base on the regarded Russian and Czech publications (notice so the newest terminology).
Syllabus
  • Professional translation and its characteristics within Functional styles. Problems arising during translation of professional and scientific texts. Working with sources, ethics of translations. I. Translation of texts from selected areas of law (see below). 1) Constitutional Law 2) Civil Law 3) Family Law 4) Law of Inheritance 5) Criminal Law II. Translation of texts from selected fields of healthcare.

Teaching methods
Comparative group translation analysis of students’ translations.
Assessment methods
Active work during seminars.
Written linguistic test: specialized translation focused on the terminology of this field of study.
The condition for passing the credit is, apart from other requirements of the lecturer, a minimum of 75% attendance at seminars.
